I thought I had this wife thing down. I prayed for my husband, spoke life into his dreams, kept our home beautiful, and was sweet to him… when it was convenient. But God showed me I was playing Christian wife instead of being one. The truth I didn’t want to see was I would pray for him in the morning then give him the silent treatment by dinner. I’d speak life over his business then withhold my body when I was mad. I’d smile in public then make sure I got the last word in every argument at home. I called it “protecting my peace.” God called it what it really was: manipulation. This is what I was doing RIGHT: 1. Praying for him daily 2. Encouraging his vision 3. Keeping our home beautiful 4. Being affectionate… sometimes Here’s where I was DEAD WRONG: 1. I shut down instead of speaking up - Proverbs 15:1 says a soft answer turns away wrath. Silence isn’t soft. It’s a weapon. 2. I withheld intimacy as punishment - 1 Corinthians 7:3-5 doesn’t say “give yourself to your husband when he deserves it.” It says don’t deprive one another. My body wasn’t mine to weaponize. 3. I had to win every argument - Proverbs 21:9 hit different when I realized I’d rather be right than be at peace. I’d rather have the last word than have his heart. The conviction wrecked me: You can do all the “good wife” things and still dishonor your husband in the ways that matter most. I was sweet in public but silent in private. Prayerful on my knees but punishing on my feet. I looked submitted but my heart was rebellious. The change happened when I got honest. Being a Godly wife isn’t a checklist. It’s a heart posture. And my heart was more concerned with control than with Christ. Ephesians 5:33 doesn’t say “respect your husband when he earns it.” It says respect him. Period. Not because he’s perfect. Because God commanded it. What changed my heart posture: 1. I started speaking when I was hurt instead of shutting him out 2. I stopped using intimacy as leverage and started seeing it as ministry 3. I learned to close my mouth even when I wanted the last word The heard truth I used to struggle with - My husband can’t read my mind through my silence. He can’t feel loved through my punishment. And he can’t lead when I’m constantly competing. If this convicted you, don’t run from it. Run to Jesus with it. He’s not asking you to be perfect. He’s asking you to be obedient. And sometimes obedience looks like apologizing when you’re still upset. Giving when you want to withhold. Softening when you want to fight. That’s not weakness. That’s biblical wifehood. So much of the disappointment I felt in marriage wasn’t because my husband failed it was because I expected him to be the answer to wounds he didn’t cause, pressures he didn’t know about, and needs I never fully voiced. Unmet expectations will quietly suffocate a marriage. They turn assumptions into accusations, silence into distance, and good men into emotional villains in our minds. God had to show me something humbling but freeing: my husband is human - he is not God. He can love me, but he cannot complete me.
